2010 – Rockers The Who fear they’ve taken their final bow – because they’re struggling to stage shows with Pete Townshend’s hearing problems. The 64 year old has suffered from partial deafness and tinnitus for many years, and admits the condition is now so bad he is having to cut back the amount of time he spends on stage and in the recording studio.
He is testing new in-ear monitors, which help ease his tinnitus – but frontman Roger Daltrey fears their performance in London last month could be their last, if Townshend’s health problems persist. Daltrey tells Uncut magazine, “If carrying on is going to mean Pete going deaf, let’s stop now. Entering old age is a silent world – nothing is worth that.”
“That (last month’s concert) might have been the last gig. I honestly don’t know. We’re trying to deal with issues that we have never dealt with before. Our bodies are beginning to give up on us. I’ve had voice problems in the past year that I’ve managed to sort out and I’m really enjoying singing again but you have to be realistic – I am 66 years old.”
2004 – Welsh rock band The Stereophonics play a gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall to benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust. They’re joined onstage by Ron Wood, The Jam’s Paul Weller, The Who’s Roger Daltrey and Manic Street Preachers’ James Dean Bradfield.
1974 – The Who sell out Madison Square Garden in eight hours on This Day in Rock! Selling out four nights with 80,000 tickets sold. Nowadays.. let’s see … at $260 a ticket…. that would be… $20,800,800.00.. woo hoo… man I gotta get me a band.
1968 – The Who, Joe Cocker and The Grease Band, The Mindbenders and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown all appeared at The Walthamstow Granada Theatre, England.
1965 – The Who recorded ‘My Generation’, at Pye studios, London. When released as a single it reached No.2 on the UK chart, held off the No.1 position by The Seekers ‘The Carnival Is Over’. Roger Daltrey would later say that he stuttered the lyrics to try to fit them to the music. The BBC initially refused to play the song because it did not want to offend people who stutter.
On the Smothers Brother’s show.
LYRICS:
People try to put us d-down (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
Just because we get around (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
Things they do look awful c-c-cold (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
I hope I die before I get old (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
This is my generation
This is my generation, baby
Why don’t you all f-fade away (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
And don’t try to dig what we all s-s-say (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
I’m not trying to cause a big s-s-sensation (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
I’m just talkin’ ’bout my g-g-g-generation (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
This is my generation
This is my generation, baby
Why don’t you all f-fade away (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
And don’t try to d-dig what we all s-s-say (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
I’m not trying to cause a b-big s-s-sensation (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
I’m just talkin’ ’bout my g-g-generation (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
This is my generation
This is my generation, baby
People try to put us d-down (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
Just because we g-g-get around (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
Things they do look awful c-c-cold (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
Yeah, I hope I die before I get old (Talkin’ ’bout my generation)
