2008 – Radiohead have signed up to play a free concert for BBC Radio 2 and will also record a series of interviews ahead of their UK tour.Fans can apply for tickets over the phone but other BBC radio networks will also be giving them away on air. Recipients will be chosen randomly.
Radio 2 head of music Jeff Smith said: “You’d be a fool to miss the concert,” which takes place in London on 1 April.
Fans can apply for tickets until Thursday by calling 08700 100 200.
The show will be held at the BBC’s Radio Theatre, inside its Broadcasting House HQ in central London.
Radiohead recently announced they would not play at Glastonbury this summer because poor public transport to the festival has a negative impact on the environment.
However, they have agreed to headline two out of three nights at the inaugural All Points West Festival in Jersey City, New Jersey, in August.
In October the group released their seventh studio album online and let fans decide what they wanted to pay for it.
In Rainbows reached number one in the UK Top 40 charts in January.
2008 – Radiohead were forced to abandon an intimate gig at Rough Trade East records in London after police raised safety fears. The band moved the gig to a nearby club after over 1,500 fans turned up after the event was announced in the morning promising tickets to the first 200 fans.
2008 – Radiohead topped the US album charts with the physical release of ‘In Rainbows’, originally sold via the internet for a price chosen by fans. The album sold 122,000 copies during its first week on release, giving the band a second US chart topper following 2000′s ‘Kid A’, which sold an initial 207,000 copies.
2007 – Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke admitted he was among the thousands of people who paid nothing to download the band’s latest album In Rainbows. Speaking to BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, Yorke said: “There wasn’t any point. I just move some money from one pocket to the other.” According to one survey, three in five people paid nothing at all for it. Yorke added that no one was allowed to have copies of the master recording in case it was leaked beforehand.
2006 – Thom Yorke has more reasons to be unhappy. The Radiohead frontman’s solo disc The Eraser debuts at No. 2 in the U.S. album charts, right below hits compilation Now That’s What I Call Music.
2005 – OK Computer by Radiohead was voted the best album of all time in a poll by UK TV station Channel 4. U2 were in second place with The Joshua Tree and Nirvana in third with Nevermind.
2004 – The BBC name Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood their composer in residence. Greenwood will have access to the BBC archives and use of the BBC Concert Orchestra for a piece he will compose over the next three years.
2004 – Radiohead is forced to cancel its show in Melbourne after lead singer Thom Yorke develops severe problems with his voice. A local specialist diagnoses Yorke with hoarseness of voice, a significant upper airway infection and associated heavy inflammation of his vocal chords.
