2006 – Metallica inducts Black Sabbath into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Metallica also performs a short set of Sabbath songs during the event at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Other inductees include Blondie, Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sex Pistols and A&M Records co-founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss.
2004 – David Crosby is arrested for leaving a bag of Marijuana, a knife and a loaded .45 gun in a hotel room in New York. The bail is set to $3500 for his release.
1998 – Van Halen release their first album with new singer Gary Cherone, titled Van Halen III. The band promotes it with a midnight record-signing session at a New York record store.
1998 – “Lucky Numbers,” a new Las Vegas-themed compilation of classic songs by Frank Sinatra, is released. For six months, the set is sold exclusively in the gift shops of Vegas hotel/casino New York-New York.
1998 – The writer sons and daughters of accomplished songwriters appear at an acoustic concert at New York’s Town Hall. Performers include Wendy and Carnie Wilson (daughters of Brian Wilson), Jen Chapin (Harry Chapin), Marvin Gaye III (Marvin Gaye), Isaac Hayes III and Heather Hayes (Isaac Hayes), and Rachid (Ronald Bell of Kool & the Gang).
1995 – To hype her new Bedtime Stories album, Madonna holds what she calls “the world’s biggest pajama party” at New York’s Webster Hall. Madonna doesn’t perform, but delights the 1,500-strong throng by reading a story from David Kirk’s Miss Spider’s Tea Party in that bizarre English accent of hers.
1992 – Natalie Cole is the sentimental favorite at the Grammy Awards in New York City. “Unforgettable,” her tribute to her father, receives two awards, including album of the year. The single of the same name wins record of the year and traditional pop performance for Cole, plus two other honors, including song of the year for songwriter Irving Gordon.
