The John Bonham Story, narrated by Dave Grohl (THE FOO FIGHTERS, THEM CROOKED VULTURES), will air 3 PM (BST) Monday, May 31, on BBC6 Music. LED ZEPPELIN guitar legend Jimmy Page dropped by BBC6 Music to talk about the documentary regarding his former comrade in arms, John Bonham. The two-part interview with host Lauren Laverne can be heard at this location.
“John Bonham was an extraordinary musician – head and shoulders above anyone around him,” Page remarked during the interview. “He had a definite vision of the drums, and how they should be played and how they would fit in with a band. It’s without doubt that his technique was beyond everybody else’s, and that’s why he’s so looked to, and looked back to with such reverence and love.”
Regarding Zeppelin’s early beginnings Page recalled: “I wanted it to be blues and for it to be rock, plus an eclectic taste – the way “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” was planned –no one else had done that before. John Bonham brought so much spirit to it – we were four musical equals and John was the backbone of the band. I certainly wanted to make something that was lasting.”
About Led Zeppelin performing again Page responded: “I never ruled anything out after the O2.’’
2010 – Radio Station, “Absolute Classic Rock” names, “Stairway to heaven” the UK’s favorite classic rock song on This Day in Rock! Listeners of the famed radio station voted in 2 other tunes from the Zep as well… “Whole lotta love” at No. 4, and “Rock n’ Roll” at No. 7.
And on Feb. 14th, 1992, Wayne Campbell is denied playing his fav song in a music store!
2010 – A very rare Led Zeppelin recording from a 1971 gig at St Matthew’s Baths Hall in Ipswich, England was unearthed at a car boot sale on This Day in Rock.
The bootleg copy of the audio from the group’s gig on November 16th 1971 was picked up for just “two or three pounds” by music fan Vic Kemp. “I was going through a stand of CDs at the car boot at Portman Road and the guy who was selling them said, ‘You might be interested in this,’” Vic Kemp told the Evening Star. “It must have been recorded by someone standing at the front with a microphone. You can hear Robert Plant talking to the audience quite clearly.”
2010 – A rare Led Zeppelin live recording has been unearthed – in a car boot sale. The band’s celebrated gig at St. Matthews Baths Hall, a converted swimming pool in Ipswich, during November 1971 was never actually recorded. Or so everyone thought.
However, Zeppelin fan Vic Kemp came across a CD of the entire gig while rummaging through a car boot sale in Ipswich.
Just goes to prove, if you’re prepared to look carefully you never know what gem might be discovered in the oddest of places!
