2006 – U2′s Bono and the Edge team with Pearl Jam and join Aussie acts Jet, Paul Kelly, Eskimo Joe, Evermore and the John Butler Trio at a Make Poverty History concert in Melbourne. The event draws 14,000 to the Myer Music Bowl, and is broadcast to thousands more on giant screens through Melbourne, Brisbane and two major Victorian regional towns Geelong and Bendigo.
2006 – Go-Betweens’ principal Grant McLennan dies in his sleep at his home in Brisbane, Australia. He is 48. During the 1980s, the literate jangle pop band were considered Australia’s answer to The Smiths.
1998 – Oasis’ Liam Gallagher is charged in an Australian court after he allegedly headbutted a fan, breaking the fan’s nose. Gallagher, the British group’s lead singer, is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm by the Brisbane Magistrate’s Court and freed on $(AUS)10,000 bail.
