Bret Michaels

2010 -Bret Michaels receives FOX411.COM honor, ‘Celebrity of the Year’!

For Bret Michaels, 2010 was one wild ride, and we were there with him every step of the way.

From injury to illness, from the boardroom to the bedroom, Michaels made news just about every way you can imagine in 2010, making him FOX411.com’s Celebrity of the Year.

“I am completely honored—I’m at a loss for words other than just a big thank you,” Michaels told FOX411.com in an exclusive interview. “It’s a completely awesome honor!”

In 2009, Michaels was in the headlines when the curtain came down prematurely on his nose during Poison’s Tony Awards performance. But that was nothing compared to what he’d suffer in 2010.

“Talk about roses and thorns,” said Michaels. “In 2010, it was either really good or it really sucked—there was no in-between.”

In April, the “Rock of Love” star had a major health scare when doctors discovered he had suffered a massive brain hemorrhage after complaining of a headache. “Less than two weeks after (an emergency appendectomy), I was sitting on my couch—and I knew instantly,” he said. “When you have a subarachnoid hemorrhage, the vein actually explodes. There’s nothing left of it. It felt like someone shot me in the back of the head.”

Michaels’ girlfriend, Kristi Gibson, rushed him to the emergency room. “I thought, ‘This is it. I’m going to die.’ They were asking me if I had a will in place. It was painfully surreal.” Michaels spent eleven days in intensive care, followed by weeks of physical therapy.

As the live finale of “Celebrity Apprentice” approached in May, fans were concerned the bandana-bedecked rocker wouldn’t be healthy enough to tape the show. Michaels not only returned for the finale, he won—donating his prize of $640,000 to the American Diabetes Association, a disease he has suffered from since childhood. “I felt good to bring awareness to the cause. I wanted to be able to show kids that it’s not a death sentence.”

Just days later, against doctors’ advice, Michaels performed on the “American Idol” finale, watched by almost 20 million people. “When I rehearsing, they wanted me to walk down those big white steps—I told them that unless the show was going to be two hours long, I would never make it to the microphone! But what an amazing night. Everyone stood on their feet—it was a great feeling!”

In July, Michaels released his new album, “Custom Built,” which featured a duet with Miley Cyrus, “Nothing to Lose.”

“‘Nothing to Lose’ ended the first week No. 3 on the Hot AC charts, up there with Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga,” Michaels said. “It was a weird place for me to be on the charts, but I loved it!”

First Michaels had to scuttle rumors that he and Miley had a fling. “Everyone went crazy thinking there was some kind of relationship between us,” Michaels explained. “I just laughed at it. It was a bazillion percent untrue.”

But the Cyrus rumors were just starting.

By November, reports were pouring in that Michaels had an affair with Miley’s mom, Tish Cyrus, contributing to the end of her marriage to country crooner Billy Ray Cyrus.

“They were determined—somewhere along the line, I was having relationship with someone in the Cyrus family,” Michaels laughed.

Michaels immediately blasted the gossip, telling “Fox & Friends” that he had known the Cyruses  “forever” and that he never had a romantic relationship with Tish. “I took pictures with Tish at ‘Good Morning America.’ Next thing I know—within an hour of that, we were in a torrid love affair. We both kind of laughed it off, but then when Tish and Billy Ray separated, then the rumors went insane. I put a statement out that it was untrue, but no one cared.”

And with his big year coming to a close, the Michaels news train refused to pull into the station.

In early December, Michaels proposed to his baby momma and on-off girlfriend of sixteen years, Kristi Gibson. The proposal was taped for the finale of Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It, which aired December 20, 2010. “When I proposed, I thought I was going to be one of those guys on YouTube who goes to get the ring and they face plant,” Michaels told FOX411.com. “But it happened really naturally, it was very in the moment. I got my fingers crossed that we’re both going to make it really work.”

Michaels’ calendar is already filled for 2011, with an operation to repair the hole in his heart scheduled for the third week of January, resuming his world tour, doing a celebrity cruise and publishing his autobiography this summer, “Roses and Thorns: The Reality of My Rock and Roll Fantasy.”

“It will make you laugh as hard as you cry,” Michaels said. “And I’ve got the pictures to prove most of it!”

One highlight of the upcoming tome: Bret losing his virginity to a “slightly older” woman in a fish hatchery, “with my motorcycle and an eight-track tape playing in the background.”

So congratulations, FOX411.com Celebrity of the Year Bret Michaels. We can’t wait to see what else you do in 2011.

Just one request: no more brain hemorrhages.

2010 – BRET MICHAELS Looking Forward To Heart Surgery

According to Showbizspy.com, BRET MICHAELS is looking forward to his heart surgery.

The POISON singer — who has suffered a series of health problems over the past 12 months, including a brain hemorrhage and the discovery of a hole in his heart — can’t wait to get his health back on track.

“In January, I get my heart operation,” the rocker told US TV show Extra.

“I’m feeling about 80% right now, but once I get that done, I’m gonna be feeling a lot better!”

Michaels recently admitted starring in his own VH1 reality show has boosted his CD sales.

“TV has absolutely made my sales go up, made my tour guarantees go up,” he said earlier this year.

“TV has been a great addition to my career. But the key thing is knowing what to walk away from. I advise anyone-especially musicians-to be very careful not to just grab anything they throw your way.”

Bret Michaels of Poison

2010 – Bret Michaels’ Doctors Deny Rumors That Singer Faked Medical Emergencies

07/08/2010
. Some people were amazed at Bret Michaels’ Lazarus like recovery from a series of very serious medical emergencies. Others took it further and became skeptical and some cynical enough to started suggesting that the Poison frontman and reality TV star was faking it for PR purposes. Now Bret’s camp has issues a strong statement, including the debunking of such rumors by Bret’s neurosurgeon and a doctor who operated on the singer. Here is what they had to say:

Recently there have been a few erroneous, false and irresponsible statements spread on the internet and one news station that Bret Michaels medical condition wasn’t serious, real or life threatening.

Dr. Joseph Zabramski, MD, Bret’s neurosurgeon at Barrow Neurological Institute states, “The fact is, the subarachnoid hemorrhage that Mr. Michaels suffered was very real, and very serious as was the T.I.A (warning stroke) and P.F.O., which will be operated on later this year. A subarachnoid hemorrhage is a life-threatening, neurosurgical emergency that requires an extensive work up and management in the ICU to prevent re-bleeding and manage the complications associated with the initial hemorrhage. For anyone to speculate that this was not a life threatening medical emergency is absolutely incorrect. Between 15 and 20 percent of patients die as a result of the initial hemorrhage, and only approximately 50 percent of those that survive have a good outcome. Recovery from subarachnoid hemorrhage is determined primarily by the size of the initial bleeding episode. Mr. Michaels quick reaction to the hemorrhage and immediate medical attention that followed aided in his ability to make a strong recovery and stop the brain hemorrhage before it caused severe and permanent brain damage. Mr. Michaels is fortunate to be alive after all that he has been through. Bret is truly one of the most determined individuals I have ever met when it comes to an attempt at making a full recovery.

Dr. Greg Gonzaba, whose team treated Michaels for the appendicitis in San Antonio. states “When I arrived I found Mr. Michaels to be acutely distressed, upon my examination I concluded he was suffering from an “acute abdomen”, a medical diagnosis suspicious for a serious, potentially fatal abdominal problem, such as appendicitis, cholecystitis or possible diverticulitis. These conditions, if left untreated could escalate to a potentially fatal problem such as organ rupture, sepsis/toxicity and eventually death by overwhelming infection not to mention Mr. Michaels is a diabetic which could complicate the condition. For a news source to assume and state his condition was not serious is completely false and irresponsible.”

In recent months Bret Michaels’ health issues and determination to recover and continue touring have been viewed as both inspirational by some and as potentially jeopardizing to his health by others. Michaels, a lifelong type 1 diabetic, had an emergency appendectomy, a brain hemorrhage, a T.I.A (warning stroke) and was diagnosed with a P.F.O (hole in his heart). This domino effect happened over the course of a month and a half. Although Michaels is not 100% yet his fight to recover both physically and mentally combined with continued lab work including blood tests MRI’s and physical’s, 4 daily insulin injections along with 2 daily Lovenox injections to thin the blood will be continued until he is able to have the operation on his heart in the fall ”

Janna Elias V.P. of Michaels Entertainment states “All people heal differently and while Bret may be out on the road and performing he is still not 100%. He still has pain from the chemical meningitis, short term memory loss and gets fatigued quicker than normal. Bret isn’t by any means trying to put his health in jeopardy by being on the road. He simply feels that music is a powerful healer. For Bret to sit around and not live his life to the fullest would likely be more detrimental to his recovery then playing music, it is the same mind set as the lyrics to Tim McGraw’s song “Live like you were Dying.”

2010 – Bret Michaels In Critical Condition After Suffering Brain Hemorrhage

Poison frontman Bret Michaels is in critical condition from a brain hemorrhage after being rushed to an undisclosed hospital on Thursday night after complaining of a severe headache.

People.com first reported on Friday that Michaels, 47, suffered a brain hemorrhage, with an anonymous source telling them, “After several CAT scans, MRIs and an angiogram, [doctors] decided to keep Michaels in the ICU and are running several tests to determine the cause.” The source said, “[It] will be touch and go for the next few days while he is under intense observation.”

The Associated Press confirmed with Michaels’ publicist that the star did suffer a brain hemorrhage and is in critical condition. Joann Mignano told AP that tests are being conducted and that no further information was available.

Bret Michaels was rushed to hospital after suffering from an excruciating headache which doctors said was due to bleeding at the base of his brain stem, according to Jam!. This is the second time this month that Michaels has been rushed to the hospital. Last week he had an emergency appendectomy in San Antonio, where he was set to take the stage for a solo concert.

Aside from fronting Poison, Michaels is also known as a reality TV star from his Vh1 “Rock of Love” and he is a contestant in the current season of “The Celebrity Apprentice”.

Donald Trump said in a statement, “He’s a great competitor and champion, and I hope he will be fine”.

2010 – Bret Michaels says he has nothin’ to apologize for about “Nothin’ to Lose,” his new song featuring Miley Cyrus. The song caused a bit of controversy with the teen pop queen singing about “slowly get undressed.” Now the 46 year-old Poison “rocker” defends the lyric in an interview with US Magazine: “the part where it says she slowly gets undressed, Miley says, ‘Yeah she does.’ It has no reference to her and I. It’s not even a duet… As God is my witness, there is nothing I have to be defensive about,” he says. “I’m a good Dad. I just thought it was a beautiful song. “

Bret Michaels

1963 – Bret Michaels is born Bret Michael Sychak, on This Day in Rock. He is an American musician, actor, director, screenwriter, producer and reality television personality. He first gained fame as the lead vocalist of the glam metal band Poison. Besides his career as lead singer, he has several solo albums to his credit, as well as one chart single. He appeared in the VH1 reality show Rock of Love with Bret Michaels and its sequels, and as a judge on the talent show Nashville Star. He was the winning contestant on NBC’s reality show Celebrity Apprentice 3.

Michaels was born Bret Michael Sychak, to Wally and Marjorie Sychak, north of Pittsburgh in the city of Butler, Pennsylvania.

At the age of six he fell ill, and during a three-week stay in the hospital, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Music career

Michaels began playing the guitar as a teenager. With drummer Rikki Rockett, bass player Bobby Dall and guitarist Matt Smith, he formed the band Paris, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1983. After playing the Pennsylvania bar circuit, in early 1984 they moved to Los Angeles to seek fame on the Sunset Boulevard scene, eventually changing their name to Poison.
1980s – 1990s

Local publicity about the band eventually led to a record deal with Enigma Records, and their first album, Look What the Cat Dragged In. It did not see great success until 1987, when Michaels convinced the band to film a video for their song, “Talk Dirty to Me.” The album went platinum, and the band became famous.

1987 also saw the dissolution of his relationship with Lewis, who felt that fame had changed him. Though Michaels contends that Lewis was unfaithful to him, Lewis (now Lewis Crosby) insists that it was Michaels who was unfaithful. Michaels was inspired by the breakup to write “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”, explaining that the rose represented his fame and success, whereas the loss of his relationship represented the thorn. The song was released as a power ballad single in December 1988, and is regarded as “the ultimate 80s anthem about heartbreak.”

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s Poison became one of the biggest glam metal bands in the world, recording their second album, the multi-platinum selling Open Up and Say… Ahh!, and their third album, the multi-platinum selling Flesh & Blood. However, their lives were characterized by the escalating tension between Michaels and DeVille that derived from their mutual drug use, which came to a head during their 1990/91 “Flesh and Blood” world tour. Also cited is the spectacle of DeVille’s behavior during the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards. After getting into a fistfight with Michaels, DeVille left the band, and descended further into addiction. Poison went on with new guitarist Richie Kotzen recording the album Native Tongue and then with guitarist Blues Saraceno recording the album Crack a Smile… and More!. In the mid 1990s, after a night of partying, Michaels came close to dying when he crashed his Ferrari into a telephone pole. He incurred serious injury, including broken ribs, a disfigured nose and lost teeth. In 1999, reunited with original guitarist C.C. Deville, Poison went on a successful greatest hits reunion tour. In the next decade Bret Michaels would split his time between Poison and a successful solo career.
2000s

Michaels recorded his first solo album in 1998 A Letter from Death Row, the soundtrack to the same-titled movie he directed, wrote, and starred in. In 2003, he released the studio album Songs of Life which featured the singles “Raine” (dedicated to his daughter) and “Bittersweet”. Michaels also released his first solo music video for the single “Raine”.

Michaels served as a judge during the 2005 season of reality television singing competition Nashville Star and released a country rock album in the same year called Freedom of Sound which featured the singles “Right Now, Right Here”, “Open Road” which Michaels performed live on the show and the hit single “All I Ever Needed” (featuring Jessica Andrews), which also included a music video.

Michaels released a best of album called Rock My World in June 2008 which featured music from his reality television series Rock of Love including the new singles “Go That Far” (Rock of Love theme), “Fallen” and “Start Again”, the first 2 also featuring music videos with clips from the series. The album charted at #40 on the Billboard 200, #4 on the Top Independent Albums, #4 on the Top Hard Rock Albums and #16 on the Top Rock Albums chart.

Michaels released a 30-minute DVD from (Time Life) in 2008 called Hard & Heavy Confidential featuring Bret Michaels which included acoustic versions of “All I Ever Needed”, “Driven”, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and “Something to Believe In”, it also included in depth interviews.

In March 2010, Michaels released a new single called “Nothing to Lose” from his upcoming new studio album, Custom Built. The song featured the guest vocals of Miley Cyrus. In April 2010, he released the second single “Lie to Me” and in May 2010 released the third single, “Wasted Time”. Michaels performed on the American Idol season 9 finale on May 26 against his doctor’s recommendation. Michaels also performed a duet of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” with Miley Cyrus on the June 18, 2010 episode Good Morning America.

On July 6, 2010, Michaels released his new album Custom Built, which along with its three singles, includes the song “Riding Against the Wind”, which is the theme song for his new reality TV series Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It. The album is Michaels highest charting solo album to date peaking at #1 on both the Top Independent Albums and Top Hard Rock Albums chart and also charting at #4 on the Top Rock Albums and #14 on the Billboard 200.

On August 4, 2010, Michaels appeared in the fifth season of America’s Got Talent and performed “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”, accompanying himself on acoustic folk guitar.

Despite not being released as a single, a music video was produced for “Riding Against the Wind” a song from Michaels’ latest album “Custom Built” that also doubles as the theme song for his new VH1 reality show Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It. The music video was released on October 7, 2010, exclusively at Billboard’s and contains footage from the series, which officially premieres on VH1 on October 18, 2010.
Rock of Love

Michaels starred in the reality television dating competition series Rock of Love with Bret Michaels, the first season of which premiered in July 2007. Jes Rickleff was the winner of Season One. However, she announced during the October 2007 reunion show that she and Michaels were not right for each other and told runner-up Heather he was all hers and that he should have chosen Heather. The first season was released on DVD in early 2008.

The show’s second season premiered on January 13, 2008. On April 13, 2008, Michaels selected Ambre Lake as his “Rock of Love”. After the show the two maintained a relationship, but parted ways after just a few months due to personal commitments, they remain good friends.

A third season, Rock of Love Bus, premiered on January 4, 2009. which was a series high for VH1,
Other television and film appearances

Michaels and actor Charlie Sheen established a film production company, Sheen/Michaels Entertainment, which produced the movie A Letter from Death Row (1998), which Michaels wrote, directed and starred in, and for which he released a soundtrack album. They also produced No Code of Conduct that same year, which Michaels also directed and acted in. Their company also produced the feature film Free Money, starring Marlon Brando and Mira Sorvino, and the surfer movie In God’s Hands in which Michaels also had a small acting role.

Michaels appeared in the CBS sitcom Yes, Dear, Season 1, Episode 6, titled Greg’s Big Day, first aired 6 November 2000. He also appeared as himself in three episodes of The Chris Isaak Show from 2001 to 2004.

On May 1, 2008, Michaels appeared on a special celebrity edition of Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, on which he raised $200,000 to donate to charity.

He earned $640,000 for the American Diabetes Association for competing and ultimately winning the Celebrity Apprentice 3.
Personal life

Bret Michaels was involved with Pamela Anderson. An abridged version of an explicit sex tape the couple made appeared on the Internet in 1998 and was released on DVD on September 7, 2005, by Metro Studios.

Michaels has two daughters with Kristi Lynn Gibson. Raine Elizabeth Sychak was born in May 2000,

Michaels is a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League and the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League.

On July 21, 2010, the DeKalb County, Indiana Sheriff’s Department discovered marijuana and other unspecified drugs in Michaels’s two tour buses after drug sniffing dogs supposedly alerted to the odor of narcotics. Bret Michaels consented to an open search of the buses.

On August 5, 2010 the Bret Michaels Band arrived for a concert in Syracuse, NY. When they got there early in the morning, there was no stage and no set up for a show. The promoter, without notifying Bret, had “posponed” the show the day before to ticket holders. Hundreds of fans showed up to Bret’s bus, for which he signed autographs and took pictures. The show never happened with promoter Mike Banks stating lack of ticket sales. Apparently, he didn’t have the retainer money for the band. Refunds have yet to be issued to ticket holders and Bret is pursuing a lawsuit against Mr. Banks. Michaels stated that he would return in November 2010 for a make-up show. This also has yet to happen.

While filming the finale of his reality show, Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It, Michaels proposed to Kristi Gibson, the mother of his two children and his on-again, off-again companion of 16 years.
Health

On April 12, 2010, Michaels was rushed to the hospital after suffering intense stomach pains, and an emergency appendectomy was performed.

In a news conference on May 5, 2010, Dr. Joseph Zabramski said Michaels has been released from the hospital and that “He’s just one of those lucky people” and that “he’ll make a complete recovery”.

On May 20, 2010, it was reported on his official website
