2004 – Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, whose avant-garde approach to his instrument influenced John Coltrane and others, dies of cancer in Boston. He is 69.
2003 – Ozzy Osbourne seeks treatment for Parkinson’s Disease-like tremors and postpones a fall European tour, The veteran rock artist says in a statement, “I have been in Boston for the last three weeks, having medical tests for a tremor which has become markedly worse over the last two years.”
2003 – Linda Suffoletto, hospitalized following the Rhode Island nightclub fire set off by rock band Great White’s pyrotechnics, dies, bringing the death toll to 97. Sixty people remain hospitalized.
2003 – A lawyer for Great White’s tour manager says the band had permission from a Rhode Island nightclub to use pyrotechnics at their fatal Feb. 20 show. Ninety-six people died after the club caught fire. The Boston Herald reports the band’s record sales are up following the tragedy.
2002 – Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher suffers from whiplash and shock after he is injured in a car accident in Indianapolis. The band is forced to postpone upcoming concerts in Philadelphia and Boston.
2002 – Boston indie heroes the Throwing Muses temporarily reunite, as Tanya Donelly, David Narcizo, Bernard Georges, and Robert Rust join Kristin Hersh onstage during a “fan appreciation” gig.
