2008 – Starry Night Gala To Honor Sir George Martin
The Grammy Foundation announced…
The GRAMMY Foundation will honor Sir George Martin, a GRAMMY Trustees Award recipient, six-time GRAMMY Award winner and one of music’s most successful and influential producers, at its annual signature gala Starry Night on July 12 at the University of Southern California. Martin will be the recipient of the Foundation’s Leadership Award, which salutes noteworthy humanitarians whose charitable work and contributions align with the mission of the Foundation. This prestigious award is being presented to Martin in recognition of a lifetime of commitment and dedication to social, cultural, economic and educational issues spanning the globe. The annual concert and dinner benefit raises funds for the GRAMMY Foundation, which helps preserve our nation’s musical heritage and provides programs that foster future generations of music professionals.
2006 – Alicia Keys joins David Bowie for a neo soul-injected take on the latter’s Changes to close out a star-studded New York benefit for the Keep a Child Alive organization, which helps AIDS- and poverty-stricken children in Africa.
2006 – Musicians like David Byrne and Sufjan Stevens share the stage with literary celebs like Sarah Vowell and Jon Stewart at the first Revenge of the Book Eaters charity event, held at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Byrne, Stevens and John Roderick of the Long Winters all perform short sets at the event, which benefits the 826 Writing Centers, and tutoring workshops founded by author Dave Eggers.
2006 – During its second annual benefit concert at the Music Box/Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood, the MusiCares MAP Fund, a non-profit organization aimed at helping music industry professionals with addiction recovery treatment, present Metallica.
2005 – Green Day, U2, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Game, Good Charlotte, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West and David Banner are among the artists performing at MTV’s ReAct Now: Music & Relief to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
2005 – Veteran performer Olivia Newton-releases a studio album specifically for sale as part of a Hallmark program in support of breast cancer awareness month. “Stronger Than Before” is to be available Sept. 1-Oct. 31 exclusively through Hallmark Gold Crown stores. The CD retails for $9.95 with two dollars from each sale benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
2005 – Sheryl Crow, Christina Aquilera and Tim McGraw participate in a benefit for victims of the tsunami in Southern Asia. The hour-long music and celebrity-driven broadcast airs live at 8 p.m. on the East Coast and is tape-delayed on the West Coast across NBC’s broadcast and cable channels, which include USA Networks, Bravo, Trio, SCI FI, MSNBC and CNBC.
2004 – Alicia Keys, Andrea Bocelli and Carlos Santana perform at the We are the Future concert at Rome’s Circus Maximus. Organized by Quincy Jones, the all-star show benefits child care centers in African and Middle Eastern war zones.
2004 – Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder plays a surprise five-song solo set at Seattle’s Showbox club, as part of a benefit concert that raised approximately $16,000 for the local chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
2003 – Bruce Springsteen and Michael J. Fox perform “Light of Day,” the title track of the 1987 movie starring Fox, during a Parkinson’s Disease benefit at New Jersey’s Stone Pony.
