1968 – The Rolling Stones’ latest single, “Street Fighting Man,” is banned in Chicago, where the Democratic National Convention is being held, because of its political content.
1972 – Paul McCartney releases his bizarre interpretation of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” as Wings. It barely makes No. 28. McCartney apparently was making a point about censorship after the BBC banned his political single “Give Ireland Back to the Irish.”
1972 – Wings release their single “Hi, Hi, Hi.” However, the BBC bans the record because it declares the lyrics “unsuitable” for broadcast.
1973 – Australia announces that they have placed an “entry ban” on an un-named member of the Rolling Stones. The Immigration Ministry lifts the ban five days later, but the Stone’s identity is never revealed.
1973 – The Rolling Stones’ “Star Star” song is banned from British radio because of its liberal use of the word “starf*cker.”
1978 – The BBC bans the Sex Pistols song “No One Is Innocent.” I guess the SP were pissed off!
1980 – South Africa bans Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, Part II,” claiming the song is “prejudicial to the safety of the state.”
1983 – Interior Secretary James Watt bans the Beach Boys from playing on Washington, D.C.’s Mall because, he says, the music attracts a “bad element.”
1984 – BBC Radio 1 announced a ban on ‘Relax’ by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, after DJ Mike Read called it ‘obscene’, a BBC TV ban also followed. The song went on to become a UK No.1 and spent a total of 48 weeks on the UK chart.
1987 – The BBC bans George Michael’s solo single “I Want Your Sex.”
1988 – A movement to ban Grateful Dead concerts in the town of Oxford, Maine, crumbles after the protestors learn that they would have to ban concerts at the county fair, too.
1989 – The surviving Beatles sue for an injunction against Dave Clark, formerly of the Dave Clark Five, banning him from selling copies of the old Ready Steady Go! TV show featuring the Beatles. The case is later settled out of court.
