Following this week’s UK release of their critically acclaimed new studio album If the River Was Whiskey, the legendary Spin Doctors return to London on Wednesday 25th September to perform a rare concert at The Garage in Islington. Special guest is Dodgy.

A 24 hour ticket presale will start at 9am on Thursday 9th May from www.eventim.co.uk. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday 10th May.

Spin Doctors, best known for their multi-million-selling album Pocket Full Of Kryptonite, and hit singles Two Princes and Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong, have come full circle by releasing a seminal blues rock album which harks back to the late eighties when they used to play the blues circuit in New York City. The original line-up features Chris Barron (vocals), Aaron Comess (drums), Eric Schenkman (guitar) and Mark White (bass).

“When we first started we were four guys in our twenties,” remembers Aaron Comess. “The blues was such a big part of our roots. One of the reasons we came up with such a big catalogue of blues songs back then is that we’d play these downtown blues bars in New York. We were supposed to perform blues covers, but we actually wrote and performed our own blues songs.”

If The River Was Whiskey hits rewind. It’s the deep-blues album the Spin Doctors almost made before mega stardom came knocking. It finally bottles those near-mythical songs from that sweatbox circuit. It’s a homage to the band’s lost past and the freshest record you’ll hear all year. “Every note feels dangerous,” says Chris Barron.

Legendary performer and the hardest working guitarist in the business, Joe Satriani confirms the release of his 14th studio album, “Unstoppable Momentum” in the UK on Monday May 6 (U.S. release is Tuesday May 7) through Epic Records/Sony Music UK.  The album was recorded at Skywalker Sound in San Francisco and was produced by Satriani and Mike Fraser (AC/DC).

Taking a detour from his main job as lead guitarist for Journey, the multi-talented Neal Schon has put the finishing touches on his latest solo album, The Calling – released by Frontiers Records in the UK on Monday 22nd October. Produced by and featuring Schon on all guitars and bass, The Calling reunites Schon with former Journey bandmate, Steve Smith, who lends his virtuoso drum talents to all 12 tracks on the new album.

Schon set up shop at Berkeley’s famed Fantasy Studios during a break from Journey’s busy touring schedule and recorded the album, completely from scratch, in just four days. After overdubbing multiple guitar and bass parts, Schon recruited two keyboard masters to flesh out the music. Igor Len, an accomplished classical, jazz and film composer who had previously collaborated with Schon, is featured on acoustic piano throughout The Calling album.

GRAMMY Award-winning special guest Jan Hammer (Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miami Vice soundtrack) recorded Moog synthesizer solos on two tracks – Fifty Six and Tumbleweeds. Recently, Schon teamed up with Dan Barnett (Journey: Live In Manila) to produce the video for the first single and title track from The Calling.

For immediate release, London, UK –

Flying Colors, the spectacular new virtuoso prog/pop/rock band, featuring drummer Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater) and guitarist Steve Morse (Deep Purple), will release their eponymous debut album in the UK on Monday March 26th, followed by a US release on Tuesday March 27th.

Released by Music Theories Recordings, the debut album includes the talents of Mike Portnoy (drums, vocals), Dave LaRue (bass), Neal Morse (keyboards, vocals), Casey McPherson (lead vocals, guitar), and Steve Morse (lead guitar). “The album has bits and pieces of what you’d expect from each of us,” says Portnoy. “The sum of all its parts led to brand new, unchartered territory for everyone involved.”  Click here to read the full web press release and download hi res photos – www.noblepr.co.uk/Press_Releases/mascot/flyingcolors.htm.

The formation of Flying Colors began with a simple idea: virtuoso musicians and a pop singer joining together to make new-fashioned music the old fashioned way.  Refreshing, classic, old and new, the recordings are saturated with the many styles, tones and hues of the players who, in becoming a band, have delivered a unique fusion of vintage craftsmanship and contemporary music.

Mike Portnoy was the co-founding member and drummer for one of the world’s biggest prog metal bands “Dream Theater”. Neal Morse is the co-founding member of the prog rock band Spock’s Beard and is currently the prog rock supergroup “Transatlantic”.  David LaRue plays bass for the Dixie Dregs and has also worked with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.  Steve Morse has been playing lead guitar for Deep Purple for the last 16 years. Founder and leader of “Alpha Rev”, Casey McPherson, has enjoyed major success in the US with multiple hits including the song “New Morning”.

“It was quite an experience,” recalls Dave LaRue. “The band moved at a fast pace, ideas flying around the room at all times. Sections of tunes were arranged, and then re-arranged. Ideas were tried every which way until we made them work, or, in some cases, discarded them altogether. Just keeping track of everything was a challenge!” The album is filled with trial and triumph. It’s been an inspiring challenge melding folk, prog, pop, and metal all into one big recording.”

Derek Sherinian’s new solo album ‘Oceana’ is released Monday September 5th by the Music Theories Recordings label via the Mascot Label Group.

If this were the 1970’s, the heyday of such keyboard titans as Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman and Jon Lord, Sherinian would be among that elite circle of players who were superstars back in the day when such talent was not only appreciated, but celebrated in popular music. This is, however, 2011, and in this age, Derek Sherinian is the premiere rock keyboardist of his generation, a member of the supergroup Black Country Communion, a former member of Dream Theater, and a solo artist in his own right.

Sherinian has played keyboards with artists including Alice Cooper, Billy Idol, Yngwie Malmsteen and KISS. In addition to being a former member of Dream Theater, Sherinian was also a member of the prog rock band Platypus, and the founder of the progressive fusion metal band Planet X.

‘Oceana’ is mixed by legendary drummer Simon Phillips (whose drumming credits include Toto, The Who, Jeff Beck, 10CC, Roxy Music). Phillips also plays drums on the entire album.

Steve Lukather collaborates with Sherinian on ‘Mulholland’, ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Seven Sins’, while former Planet X guitarist Tony MacAlpine performs on ‘Five Elements’ and ‘Mercury 7′. Steve Stevens is featured on ‘Ghost Runner’ and the title track, while Black Country Communion band-mate Joe Bonamassa performs on ‘I Heard That’. Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake) performs on ‘El Camino Diablo’, and Jimmy Johnson plays bass on all tracks with the exception of ‘Ghost Runner’ and ‘Oceana’, which both feature Tony Franklin.

Favouring a guitar heavy rock based approach to fusion ala Jeff Beck, Sherinian’s music creates a certain energy that comes through the recordings, setting him apart from other jazz fusion artists. His music also appeals to fans of technical heavy metal. Thanks to his relentless touring schedule with a wide range of well-known artists, Sherinian easily adapts to ever changing musical genres, while always maintaining his signature style.

‘Don’t Explain’ is the debut collaboration between American singer-songwriter Beth Hart and the acclaimed Blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. The album, made up exclusively of intimate soul cover versions, will be released in the UK and Europe on Monday 26th September by Provogue Records.

Produced by Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Black Country Communion, The Black Crowes), ‘Don’t Explain’ perfectly combines Hart’s raspy and soulful vocal with Bonamassa’s unique guitar sound, as the pair unite on a stunning collection of hand-picked soul tracks, as performed by celebrated artists such as Gil Scott-Heron, Tom Waits, Etta James, Aretha Franklin and many more.

To read the full tracklisting and further info – http://www.noblepr.co.uk/Press_Releases/provogue/hart-bonamassa.htm

After crossing paths with Beth and her band on the road numerous times, Joe Bonamassa recalls how ‘Don’t Explain’ came about; “I was up late one night, I couldn’t sleep. I was playing songs on my iPod from the reissue of Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out, which included all the opening acts from that Stones show,” says Bonamassa. “As soon as the Ike & Tina tracks came on, I just said out loud, ‘Beth Hart.’ I emailed Kevin, saying, ‘Let’s do a soul covers record with Beth,’ and he replied back, ‘Actually, that’s a great idea.'”

2011 – Four decades after recording his emblematic song ‘Peace Train’, Yusuf Islam (also known as Cat Stevens) invites fans to add their voices to ‘My People’, a free download available on digital platforms worldwide from Friday March 4th.

The author of one of music’s most iconic peace anthems, ‘Peace Train’, has recorded a new homage to peace; a single entitled ‘My People’, which includes a unique chorus built up from the hundreds of voices sent in from across the globe by fans who participated through an invitation on the artist’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/yusufofficial.

Fans that connected to the artist’s Facebook base were given a pre-recorded chorus track and the possibility to record, upload, and add their own voices to the refrain. The chorus of Facebook voices has been added to the track written, composed, and recorded by Yusuf, and is now available free of charge on digital platforms worldwide including Amazon and the distributor Rough Trade, as well as from the artist’s official download page www.yusuf.ae. The official music video for My People is to be released next week.

“I decided to record my next album in Berlin, an historic city which has become an international symbol of peace since the wall came down two decades ago,” says Yusuf. “We were following the recent news across the Middle East and North Africa, and felt it was important to record a song that sent out a message of support and peace from free people, to people who want to be free.”

2011 – Gary Moore, a former guitarist with the 1970s rock band Thin Lizzy, has died at age 58, according to his official website.(CNN) —

“It is with deep sorrow and regret that we have to announce that Gary Moore passed away while on holiday in Spain last night,” the site said.

There was no immediate confirmation on the cause of death.

Moore was an original member of Thin Lizzy, based in Dublin, Ireland. The band recorded guitar-driven rock hits, including “Jailbreak” and “The Boys Are Back in Town.”

A statement from Eagle Rock Entertainment, his most recent record label, said Moore was “the consummate musician acknowledged as one of the finest guitarists that the British Isles has ever produced.”

“In a career that dates back to the 1960s, there are few musical genres that he has not turned his adroit musical hand to, and on top of his acclaimed solo work he has graced the line-ups of several notable rock bands, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II and Skid Row to name but three,” the record label said.

2011 – Bootsy Collins releases new album “Tha Funk Capital of the World”
Celebrated American funk bassist, singer and songwriter Bootsy Collins will release his new studio album “Tha Funk Capital of the World” in the UK on Monday 25th April 2011.

Released by Mascot Records, “Tha Funk Capital of the World” is a collective masterpiece so full of grooves, grit, guts and glory that Collins refers to as “the best thing I’ve ever done – a whole new chapter in the life of Bootsy.” “Funk Capital” is Bootsy’s first new studio album of original funk material since 2002’s “Play With Bootsy.” The album artwork features a dazzling 3D lenticular sleeve.

The new album features guest performances from a staggering A-list of real-life heroes including the scholar Dr. Cornell West, activist Rev. Al Sharpton, the actor Samuel L. Jackson, rappers Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and Chuck D, P-Funkers George Clinton and Bernie Worrell, percussionist Sheila E, R&B legend Bobby Womack and guitarists Buckethead and Catfish Collins; the latter being Bootsy’s brother and longtime six-string foil, who passed away during the disc’s making.

Rising to prominence playing bass guitar for James Brown in the late 1960s, and with Parliament Funkadelic in the 1970s, Collins’ thunderous, infectious bass guitar and humourous vocals established him as one of the leading pioneers of funk. In 1997 Collins, along with 15 other members of Parliament Funkadelic, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“James Brown is the biggest influence on this whole album,” says Bootsy. “When I joined his band, he took me under his wing and taught me about the business, but the most important thing he taught me about was the ‘one’ – the downbeat that always drove his music and is the engine for all great funk. What’s funny is that I was a guitar player before I joined Mr. Brown’s band, and I wanted to play bass like Jimi Hendrix. Eventually, that’s exactly what I did, adding effects and freeing up the instrument to go anywhere I imagined it could go. That’s how Bootsy became Bootsy.”

Drake has begun work on new songs with the xx member Jamie Smith and Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine. It looks like the rapper’s collaboration with Smith is intended for his own second album, Take Care, while his work with Welch is slated to appear on her next record. Drake told the BBC that “Jamie is probably one of the most exciting producers I’ve ever heard,” and that he and Welch have been hanging out in London, where last weekend she joined him onstage to sing Alicia Keys’ part in his song “Fireworks.” No release dates have been set for either Florence and the Machine or Drake, but their albums are likely to come out by the end of this year.

Rise Against plans to release a new album, Endgame, on March 15. The lead single, “Help Is On The Way,” officially impacts radio on January 25 but will land this Monday, January 17. Longtime producers Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore – who have produced three of the band’s last five albums – are once again at the helm, and frontman Tim McIlwrath told Consequence Of Sound that, “We’re living under this black cloud of doom. Everything’s spiraling out of control. The record is all about that.”

Sade, Usher, Kanye West and Willow Smith are among the multiple nominees in the music categories for this year’s NAACP Image Awards. Sade picked up four nominations while West and Usher each earned two. Smith landed a nod for Best New Artist along with B.o.B., Bruno Mars, Jason DeRulo and Nicki Minaj, as well as Outstanding Music Video for her debut single “Whip My Hair.” Other multiple nominees include Cee Lo Green, Alicia Keys, and John Legend and The Roots. The telecast of the NAACP Image Awards will air March 4 on Fox.

Rihanna is set to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine, according to a new tweet from the singer. “Just wrapped my first American Vogue cover shoot with [photographer] Annie Leibovitz…Rah!” Rihanna wrote on her Twitter, though it’s unclear when the issue will hit news stands. Rihanna also recently shot a video for Nicki Minaj’s “Fly.”

Jane’s Addiction has been hard at work on a new album in a Los Angeles studio with produer Rich Costey (Muse, Interpol) and TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek, who plays bass and is co-writing songs with the band. Singer Perry Farrell says that the next LP — tentatively titled The Great Escape — sounds unlike anything else the group has ever created. “It’s a strange mixture of that post-punk Goth darkness that Jane’s had with what’s going on today with groups like Muse and Radiohead,” he told Rolling Stone. “As much as I want to appease fans and make old Jane’s fans love me, I just can’t help myself from moving forward.” Farrell hopes to have a single out in March, and the album in stores sometime in the summer.

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy and actress Kate Hudson are expecting a baby together. The couple has been dating since the spring of 2010. “It [the pregnancy] was not planned, but they are excited and embracing it,” a source told Us Weekly, adding that Hudson is “happy for [her son] Ryder to finally have a brother or sister.”

Prince has added a fourth Madison Square Garden show to his Welcome 2 America New York residency, on the heels of four New York area shows this past December and a sold out show scheduled for January 18. The new show will take place on Febraury 7 with tickets going on sale this Saturday, January 15.

Usher

Due to illness, Usher was forced to postpone his concert at O2 World in Berlin on January 12. He has been treated by doctors for a sinus complication that affected his balance and he is already feeling better, according to his website. The show has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 13. “I am truly sorry to all my fans in Berlin who were inconvenienced by tonight’s postponement of the show,” Usher said. “I was ill and felt that I would not have been able to give them the show that they properly deserve.”

Hollywood Undead will return on March 15 with their second album, American Tragedy, featuring the new single, “Hear Me Now.” Beginning on January 20 in Reading, PA, fans can catch the group on tour with Avenged Sevenfold, Stone Sour and New Medicine for The Nightmare After Christmas Tour.

The Strokes have confirmed their first five concerts of 2011, and they’re pretty spread out geographically. The band’s dates are: March 2 in Las Vegas; July 16 in Lisbon, Portugal; July 14-17 at Spain’s Benicassim Festival; and August 13 and 14 at Japan’s Summer Sonic fest. The band also recently announced that their new album will be out on March 22.

Trey Anastasio will do an intimate theater tour with the Trey Anastasio Band starting on February 18 in Portland, ME. Anastasio will play his first solo dates in Colorado and California since 2006, wrapping up the tour with a two-night stand at Denver’s Ogden Theatre (March 1 & 2) and shows at the Music Box in Los Angeles (March 4) and the Fox Theatre in Oakland, CA (March 5). This also will be Anastasio’s first tour with full acoustic and electric sets since 1999.
