2009 – The United States Mint launched a new coin featuring American composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington, making him the second African-American to appear by himself on a US coin. There was a half-dollar minted in 1946 with Booker T. Washington on it, making him the first.

There was a half-dollar minted in 1946 with Booker T. Washington on it, so the Duke Ellington was not the first US coin to feature an African American.
