1998 – Garth Brooks’ mother undergoes 12 hours of surgery to remove a cancerous growth in her throat. Colleen Brooks had not been able to eat solid food for several years because of her condition. The surgery is performed at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. All the cancer is successfully removed, and Ms. Brooks’ first request upon hearing the news is for pizza or a cheeseburger.
