1998 – Arturo Sandoval, the internationally acclaimed trumpet player who settled in the U.S. in 1990 after defecting from his native Cuba, is granted U.S. citizenship after a sixyear struggle. Sandoval is sworn in at ceremonies in Miami. The Immigration and Naturalization Service had rejected his requests twice because he had signed papers that branded him a member of the Communist party in order to leave Cuba for an extended tour with the late Dizzy Gillespie.
