WHAT: Iconic artist and philanthropist Paul McCartney will be honored as the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year at a special event celebrating his exceptional artistic achievements as well as his philanthropic work. Proceeds from the annual Person of the Year tribute— now in its 22nd year — provide essential support for MusiCares, which ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical and personal need.
GALA: The 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year gala will begin with a cocktail reception and silent auction sponsored bythe Starkey Hearing Foundation that will offer an exclusiveandunparalleled selection of luxury items, VIP experiences, and one-of-a-kind celebrity memorabilia for bidding guests. The auction will be followed by a gala dinner sponsored by AEG Live, and a star-studded tribute concert sponsored by Acura/ELS. MusiCares offers programs and services to members of the music community including emergencyfinancial assistance for basic living expenses including rent, utilities and car payments; medical expenses including doctor, dentist and hospital bills; psychotherapy; and treatment for HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, hepatitis C, and other critical illnesses. MusiCares offers nationwide educational workshops covering a variety of subjects, including financial, legal, medical and substance abuse issues, and programs in collaboration with healthcare professionals that provide services such as flu shots, hearing tests and medical/dental screenings. The MusiCares MAP Fund® allows access to addiction recovery treatment and sober living resources for members of the music community. Staffed by qualified chemical dependency and intervention specialists, MusiCares Safe Harbor Rooms offer a support network to those in recovery while they are participating in the production of televised music shows and other major music events. MusiCares holds weekly addiction support groups for people to discuss how to best cope with the issues surrounding the recovery process. 2011 – Steve Jobs, Apple Computers, Disney, Pixar, and iTunes died today on This Day in Rock! Jobs, most notably known for the iPhone in recent years, contributed to the computer and music world. iTunes being the most notable and influential music download service in the known universe. At one time apple battled over the name ‘Apple’ with the Beatles who own the same name, but in different industries… until iTunes.
Steve… you will be missed. We equate it to the passing of Walt Disney.
2011 – Microsoft is discontinuing the Zune media player on This Day in Rock! Launched five years ago in the hope of taking on the iPod, MS calls it quits.
The player was well reviewed when it launched in 2006, and it grabbed as much as 10 percent of the market for media players. But enthusiasm faded, and the Zune has become one of many failed iPod wannabes.
Microsoft Corp. hasn’t released a major update to the line in two years. Some of the look and functionality of the Zune has been moved over to Microsoft’s smartphone software, which it says “will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy.”

2011 – Thomas Mars and Sofia Coppola get married on This Day in Rock! Engaged since May, the couple are married in Italy… making their 2 daughters, Romy and Cosima, legit. In attendance were Nicolas Cage, Jason Schwartzman, George Lucas and Johnny Depp to name a few.
2011 – Lady Gaga is the queen of Marketing when she unveils in front of the Piano on This Day in Rock! In one clip, Gaga proves that it is possible to remove your bra and play the piano at the same time. She then stands up from the piano, holding some strategically placed sheet music to stay suitable for TV. In a second promo, Gaga sits and croons the track, a jazz band backing her up.
“Sometimes I’m really happy and I write music, and sometimes I’m really angry and sometimes I’m really drunk or sometimes I’m super sober,” she says in another promo about the impending big night. “You don’t really know why or if or how you write music.”
2011 – Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” climbed back to the top of the British albums chart on This Day in
Rock! A week after her death, the album which was released in 2006 is at the top. Songs included: “You Know I’m No Good,” “Love Is a Losing Game” and “Rehab,” which contained the line: “They tried to make me go to rehab. I said ‘no, no, no’.”
Curious… it seems that record companies take advantage of dead artists like Amy and Jim Morrison. One has to wonder if death is part of the artist’s development… at any rate… they are pretty shameless.
2011 – Amy Winehouse, 27, found dead on This Day in Rock! Authorities found her at her north London home. Death is yet unknown, but Amy has battled drugs and alcohol addiction for many years, and is likely the cause.
2011 – Michael Jackson Death Trial: Dr. Murray’s lawyers ask Judge to Sequester the Jury On This Day in Rock! Dr. Conrad Murray’s Legal team asked the judge today if he would consider sequestering the jury at the time of the trial on Sept. 8th. They argue that the Media Circus will influence the jurors. Judge Michael Pastor has made no ruling as of yet, but suggested that it would be too costly for the court system to do that.
Not to worry, no passwords or financial information were taken from the site, but They did get a nice list of Email addresses. So, Watch out for that Spam Lady Gaga fans.
A statement from Universal Music said: “The hacker took a content database dump and a section of email, first and last name records were accessed. There were no passwords taken and no financial information taken.”
The record label contacted informed the police, Information Commissioner’s Office and the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), with the livid details of this ugly event.
Last week it was… Lady Gaga’s YouTube account that shut down Because of copyright infringement claims from a Japanese TV channel. In Tears She said, “Sometimes I still feel like people are trying to destroy me … I cannot be destroyed and I will not be destroyed. And you will never destroy the kingdom that is my fans.”
2011 – Rob Grill of the Grass Roots Passes Away at age 67 on This Day in Rock!
Rob Grill, the bass player and lead singer of the Grass Roots, passed away Today morning at the age of 67. Grill fell about four weeks ago and has been battling a subdural hematoma.
His wife, Nancy Grill, issued the following statement:
“My dear husband Robert Frank Grill, 67, of Mt Dora, Fl passed away peacefully in my arms at 11:37 a.m. (EST), while listening to one of his favorite songs…’Let’s Live for Today.’ He loved his fans and he loved The Grass Roots! Thank you for all of your prayers, love and support during this time.”
Grill attended Hollywood High,proceeded working at American Recording Studios with Cory Wells (Three Dog Night) and John Kay (Steppenwolf).
Joining the Grass Roots (the third incarnation) in 1966 they created many hits during his tenure. In the summer of 1967, they had their first hit, Let’s Live For Today at number 8. Other successive hits were Midnight Confessions (1968/#5), I’d Wait a Million Years (1969/#15), Temptation Eyes (1970/#15), Sooner or Later (1971/#9) and Two Divided by Love (1971/#16).
