2011 – 2nd Raid on Gibson Guitars on This Day in Rock Music History!
Guitar maker ‘Gibson faces criminal investigation over claims it violated environmental laws for importing exotic and protected woods. I guess they must be guilty of wiping out the rain forests… nevermind the housing industry or corporations who clear cut the rain forests.
On August 28 federal agents raided Gibson’s Nashville and Memphis properties, taking shipments of Indian rosewood.
The agents brandished search warrants issued amid suspicions that Gibson had violated the terms of the Lacey Act, an environmental law that requires imports to the US to comply with laws in the country of origin as well.
2011 – Microsoft is discontinuing the Zune media player on This Day in Rock! Launched five years ago in the hope of taking on the iPod, MS calls it quits.
The player was well reviewed when it launched in 2006, and it grabbed as much as 10 percent of the market for media players. But enthusiasm faded, and the Zune has become one of many failed iPod wannabes.
Microsoft Corp. hasn’t released a major update to the line in two years. Some of the look and functionality of the Zune has been moved over to Microsoft’s smartphone software, which it says “will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy.”
2011 – New Michael Jackson Album on This Day in Rock! A posthumous Michael Jackson album entitled “Immortal” is to be released in November featuring newly discovered outtakes and redesigned versions of some of his biggest hits, Epic Records said on Monday. The album, released in conjunction with Jackson’s official estate, will feature an alternative version of the Jackson 5 hit “ABC,” medleys of Jackson’s chart-topping singles, mashups, and a choir recorded for “They Don’t Really Care About Us.”
2011 – Journalist Dan Sicko dead on This Day in Rock! Dan was a journalist for Rolling Stone, Wired and Urb magazines. he was also an author of Techno Rebels. The Renegades of Electronic Funk helped promote the Chicago Techno scene of the 80′s. You will be missed, Dan.
2011 -Gibson is raided by the Feds for ….??? on This Day in Rock!
Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar Corp., Stated, “Gibson is innocent and will fight to protect its rights. Gibson has complied with foreign laws and believes it is innocent of ANY wrong doing. We will fight aggressively to prove our innocence.”
The raids forced Gibson to cease manufacturing operations and send workers home for the day while armed agents executed the search warrants. “Agents seized wood that was Forest Stewardship Council controlled,” Juszkiewicz said. “Gibson has a long history of supporting sustainable and responsible sources of wood and has worked diligently with entities such as the Rainforest Alliance and Greenpeace to secure FSC-certified supplies. The wood seized on August 24 satisfied FSC standards.”

2011 – Lady Gaga is the queen of Marketing when she unveils in front of the Piano on This Day in Rock! In one clip, Gaga proves that it is possible to remove your bra and play the piano at the same time. She then stands up from the piano, holding some strategically placed sheet music to stay suitable for TV. In a second promo, Gaga sits and croons the track, a jazz band backing her up.
“Sometimes I’m really happy and I write music, and sometimes I’m really angry and sometimes I’m really drunk or sometimes I’m super sober,” she says in another promo about the impending big night. “You don’t really know why or if or how you write music.”
2011 – Cheap Trick’s Stage Collapses on This Day in Rock!
The main stage at Ottawa Bluesfest collapsed during a Cheap Trick concert as a severe thunderstorm sent the musicians and thousands of fans running for cover.
2011 – Roger Waters performs “The Wall Live” in London at the 02 Arena on This Day in Rock! The show was sold out.

2011 – Russian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries bought the music and publishing divisions of the Warner Music Group on This Day in Rock. Acts and music include bands like: Led Zeppelin, Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
2011 – Steven Tyler from Aerosmith admitted that his addiction to drugs was so drastic that he hid cocaine in a drum on stage to take a fix during shows.
“I blew 20 million. I snorted my Porsche, I snorted my plane, I snorted my house in that din of drugs and booze and being lost.”
2011 – ‘American Idiot’ Ticket Sales Plummet on This Day In Rock!
Ticket sales for the Broadway production of American Idiot have fallen ever since Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong left the cast at the end of February. Box office grosses dropped from $1.3 million during the final week with Armstrong to $395,275 for last week’s eight performances. All of the shows on Broadway saw some sales decline in the past week, but no drop-off was as severe as American Idiot‘s. [NY Times]
2011 – Justin Bieber’s lock of hair sold for $40,668… WOW!
The mind blowing Hair change shocked fans to the core. Giving chat show host Ellen DeGeneres a lock of his hair in a recent appearence, she promptly put it up for auction on eBay reporting bids of $10,000 within one hour. When the auction was over, Bieber’s Golden Lock sold for $40,668 with an added prize of a chance to meet the teen idol next time he appears on Ellen’s show. The Gentle Barn Foundation is the charity that benefited.
Not Bad for a kid that just turned 17… Let’s see if he survives the Rock n’ Roll life style. We can think of a few other things to start lopping off the guy that would top that sale.
