2011 – Guitar Hero gets the AX… not the AXE.. meaning, sorry dudes… Strings are too exspensive… These days, guns are more popular than guitars, at least when it comes to video games. The company behind “Guitar Hero” said Wednesday that it is pulling the plug on one of the most influential video titles of the new century.
Activision Blizzard Inc., which also produces the “Call of Duty” series, is ending the “Guitar Hero” franchise after a run of nearly six years.
The move follows Viacom Inc.’s decision in November to sell its money-losing unit behind the “Rock Band” video games. Harmonix was sold to an investment firm for an undisclosed sum. Harmonix, incidentally, was behind the first “Guitar Hero” game.
Game industry analysts have long lamented the “weakness in the music genre,” as they call it — that is, the inability of the games’ makers to drum up demand for the products after a surge in popularity in the mid-2000s. Music games are often more expensive than your typical shoot-em up game because they require guitars, microphones and other musical instruments. While extra songs can be purchased for download, this isn’t enough to keep the games profitable.
Activision’s shares tumbled after the announcement, but investors were more concerned with the disappointing financial forecast from the company than the demise of “Guitar Hero.” As far as investors go, discontinuing an unprofitable product isn’t the end of the world, even if “Guitar Hero” fans disagree.
The company did better than expected in the fourth quarter, which ended in December, but that was already expected. After all, it launched “Call of Duty: Black Ops” in November.
That game, which is mostly set during the Vietnam War, made $1 billion in just six weeks in stores.
Activision said Wednesday it lost $233 million, or 20 cents per share in the latest quarter, compared with a loss of $286 million, or 23 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.
Net revenue fell to $1.43 billion from $1.56 billion.
Its adjusted earnings of 53 cents per share beat analysts’ expectations of 51 cents, according to FactSet.
Revenue that’s been adjusted to account for games with online components was $2.55 billion, up slightly from $2.50 billion a year earlier. Analysts had forecast $2.25 billion.
For the current quarter, which ends in March, Activision forecast adjusted earnings of 7 cents per share, and revenue of $640 million. Analysts are looking for earnings of 10 cents per share on higher revenue of $771 million. The company’s forecast includes restructuring costs of 2 cents to 3 cents per share.
Shares of Activision, which is based in Santa Monica, Calif., tumbled 94 cents, or 8 percent, to $10.75 in after-hours trading. The stock had closed down 19 cents at $11.69.
2011 – Kings of Leon refused to let Prince Harry win a table tennis match
The ‘Sex on Fire’ group’s drummer Nathan Followill thinks the 26-year-old royal ‘ who is third in line to the British throne ‘ is ‘cool’ but his competitive nature came to the forefront when they recently met at London’s The O2.
Nathan said: ‘We’re still pretty wide-eyed about meeting dignitaries but he’s the cool prince I think. He picked up a ping-pong bat backstage and we went at it.
”m not sure what the etiquette is when you play a prince at table tennis, but hey I’m the king aren’t I? A king trumps a prince. I think the other guys thought, ‘Maybe you should let a real prince win.’
‘But he is so tall and he’s got military training so I figured he can look after himself. It was a hard-fought battle but I took him in the end.’
Nathan ‘ who formed the band with his brothers Caleb, Jared and their cousin Matthew Followill, – also said while the group would be honoured if they were asked to play for Harry’s brother Prince William’s wedding in April, they would prefer to wait for the younger royal to get married.
He told The Sun newspaper: ‘Man, we would jump at playing the royal wedding if we were asked. Wills and Kate look like nice people.
‘But Harry is the dude. His is the wedding we would most likely play. He knows his music. He keeps it real on his iPod.’
2010 – Gene Simmons wants Simon Cowell’s job – he’s convinced he would make a better judge on the TV mogul’s reality singing contests because he has real experience in the music industry.
The Kiss rocker has joined a string of stars, including Sir Elton John and The Who’s Roger Daltrey, who have taken aim at Cowell and his hit TV competitions.
Simmons insists he is “more qualified than anybody” to dole out advice on the program, which he claims will never discover any new music legends like Jimi Hendrix or Robert Plant.
He tells Britain’s Daily Star, “I think I could be the sole judge on The X Factor, I’m more qualified than anybody on the show. Nobody on the show has written songs, then been on stage, or had record companies and managed Liza Minnelli. Nobody can shine my shoes.
“Maybe Simon should talk to me, although he is the only one on television that tells the truth. Everybody is nice, but that’s not how life is. Life is: ‘You suck, get off the stage.’ Realistic is good.
“Part of the reason we like watching these shows is because there are people up there and you’re like, ‘Are you on crack? Do you actually believe that you belong on stage?’ The biggest superstars of all time would have never made it on The X Factor.
“Imagine if Jimi Hendrix or Mick Jagger or Robert Plant came out. I wouldn’t make it, and neither would they. We’re peculiar and that’s what makes stars interesting, not the fact that you can sing well. Broadway and pop is the place where people really sing correctly.”
2010 – Vince Neil Says He Is “Taking A Beating” On Skating With The Stars
Christopher Lawrence of LVJR.com’s Life On The Couch reports: And you thought you were surprised to see Vince Neil on “Skating with the Stars” (9 p.m. Monday).
“I don’t know who stuck their hand in the hat and pulled out my name and said, ‘How about Vince Neil?’ ” the Motley Crue frontman says while waiting for members of a hockey league to clear the rink at the Las Vegas Ice Center. “You know, that’s a big mystery to me, how my name even came up to be asked to do this.”
Not that he’s ungrateful. Or unqualified.
Neil is the biggest name on the “Dancing with the Stars” spinoff — not to be confused with Fox’s low-rated 2006 effort, “Skating with Celebrities” — that also features actresses Sean Young and Rebecca Budig, reality star Bethenny Frankel, skier Jonny Moseley and Disney Channel star Brandon Mychal Smith.
Then there’s Neil’s background as a youth figure skating champion.
Seriously.
Now, I assumed that as a Los Angeles kid who has spent the past 15 years living in the desert, Neil had never been around ice that didn’t come served in a glass. The longtime Las Vegan says even his manager, whom ABC approached about the show, didn’t know he could skate.
So when the singer matter-of-factly refers to his past skating triumph, it’s like that scene in any ’80s teen comedy when the record comes to a scratching, screeching halt during the school dance.
But, sure enough, in his new autobiography, “Tattoos & Tequila: To Hell and Back with One of Rock’s Most Notorious Frontmen,” there’s a picture of a young, sweater-vest-and-tie-wearing Neil holding his first-place trophy, standing above his vanquished competition. (“I look like Justin Bieber,” Neil says with a laugh.)
So does that make him the ringer on “Skating with the Stars”?
“Well, no. I mean, I was 12. I’m almost 50 now,” Neil says. “That was a long time ago. It’s definitely not like riding a bike.”
And his body has been through a lot since then. The sorts of things that would have killed lesser men — things that led him to open his book by confirming the now legendary tale of debauchery that ensures that anyone who has heard it will never again look at an egg burrito the same way.
“It’s almost like starting over,” Neil says of his “Skating with the Stars” training. “I mean, some things kind of came back to me. But when you’re 12 years old to when you’re 49 years old, you’re not as limber. You’re not anything like you were as a kid.”
Helping him try to recapture his past glory is his professional partner, bubbly, button-cute ice dancer Jennifer Wester, who has been impressed with Neil’s eagerness to learn.
“He’s incredibly attentive as a student. Actually, that’s probably one of the most shocking things that I’ve found,” she says. “For somebody that’s had such an interesting background, you expect someone with no attention span. You expect somebody that knows who they are in the eye of the public and doesn’t want to necessarily listen to all of your little critiques. … He’s exactly the opposite.”
For safety reasons, each couple is allowed only three hours on the ice each day. But factoring in stretching, warming up and walking through the choreography, Neil and Wester have spent 10-hour days at the rink.
“I’m taking a beating, man. I should buy stock in Icy Hot,” Neil says. “You fall — you definitely fall — and ice is hard. Aches and pains and bruises. And you work muscles that you never worked before.
“This is a serious sport. You know, it’s tough,” he adds. “I don’t wanna put down ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ but, you know, come on. They’re just jumping around on the floor.”
Neil clearly is taking this opportunity seriously, but he still has an image to protect. As a result, he won’t be wearing any sequins or feathers — he’s being costumed by the guy who makes his Motley Crue stage clothes. And don’t look for him to be skating to anything lame. The music for his first routine is a closely guarded secret, but let’s just say it’s an upgrade from the “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” he skated to as a youth.
Neil looks confident on the ice this afternoon, but he has been getting a mixed reaction from those who haven’t seen him skate.
“Some fans think it’s great,” he admits. “Some fans, you know, they don’t know what to think — till I explain to them how hot that ice girls are. Now, they’re all coming around.”
But if they’re wondering why he’s doing this, it all comes down to the challenge of competing in a new arena.
“It really is the accomplishment of it. That’s really the thing,” Neil says. “That’s why I wanna do this and see how far I can push myself to be the best that I can in such a short time.
“I don’t listen to critics or anything. I’ve been in rock ‘n’ roll for 30 years, and if I choose, like, I wanna ice skate today, I’m gonna go ice skate. I don’t really listen to any (expletive) like, ‘Oh, he’s ice skating. What’s wrong? What happened to him?’ I do it because I can, and I want to.”
2009 – Nine Inch Nails Mock Chris Cornell With April Fools Joke
NME reports: In what appears to be an elaborate April Fools joke, Nine Inch Nails have announced the release of a new Timbaland-produced album called ‘Strobe Light’.
In a suspicious posting on the band’s website and a Tweeter message issued this morning (April 1), the Nine Inch Nails announced that their new full-length album can be downloaded immediately, and features collaborations from Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Jay-Z and Bono, as well as a track titled ‘Pussygrinder’ featuring Sheryl Crow.
The message contains the album’s cover art, which shows frontman Trent Reznor in a black leather jacket wearing Kanye West-style slotted shades, as well as a tracklisting featuring a list of mega-star guest collaborators including Justin Timberlake and Alicia Keys.
2009 – R&B singer Chris Brown was questioned by police in Los Angeles over a complaint of assault. The 19-year-old had pulled out of his performance at the Grammy Awards, as did his pop star girlfriend Rihanna. Police said Mr Brown argued with an unidentified woman while sitting in a car. Brown had walked into a police station and was later released on $50,000 (£34,000) bail. Los Angeles police did not identify the woman who had made the complaint against Brown.
2008 – GUNS N’ ROSES: ‘Chinese Democracy’ Track Listing Slightly Revised – Oct. 17, 2008
A slightly revised track listing for the new GUNS N’ ROSES album, “Chinese Democracy”, has now been posted at BestBuy.com, which will exclusively carry the album in the U.S. starting on November 23. A pre-order page for the long-delayed release was posted at the site on Wednesday (October 15), although the pre-order option was later taken off. The page lists 14 song titles for the record, 11 of which have either been played live or leaked online over the past few years. The Pulse of Radio reports that one of those, “Street of Dreams”, was previously known as “The Blues”, while three titles, “Scraped”, “Sorry” and “Prostitute”, have not been heard anywhere.
According to Billboard.com, sources who have heard the album say that it opens with a “blood-curdling Axl Rose scream.”
Two different covers will apparently be available, along with CD and vinyl versions. What appears to be one of the covers has been posted at the Best Buy site, showing what seems to be a bicycle with a basket perched on it.
There has still not been an official announcement regarding the November 23 arrival date for the record.
“Chinese Democracy” has been in the works since the mid-’90s, with speculation and mystery surrounding the album’s 13-year journey, ever-changing roster of players and spiraling recording costs.
