American Idol – Performance Show – Top 4

American Idol – Performance Show – Top 4

My whole note – By Eddie U

The first theme for tonight’s show is California Dreaming. All of the first round songs are from some of the great California bands.

The second theme is: Songs that the contestants wished they had written, meaning what song inspired them to be a singer.

The honor to open the show tonight went to Phillip Phillips. The best part of this song was the cute blond sax player. Phillip gave a very week opening. More praise for this average singer from the judges. What???

Hollie sang a great song by Journey for her first number. I really like this girl, but her performance of “Faithfully” lacked energy. I think the key was too low for her. She finally kicked it into gear at the end, but it was too late. She better have a strong song for her second go. The judges finally started to give Holly some affirmation.

Joshua sang a ballad for his first song. The song is everything! And the Josh Groban song didn’t help put Joshua over the top. Wow… the show is off to a very slow start with the first three singers. The contestants need to be at their best at this juncture. It seems as though the singers have hit the wall, and are exhausted.

Jessica finally infused some energy into the show with an old Etta James’ blues song. This young sixteen year old has an amazing voice, and can sing anything, and can make it sound great.

Again… the song is everything. Phillip’s second song fit him like a glove. It even made this average singer sound like a recording artist. He just might sell some records with the right material. And I’m sure Jimmy will take care of that for Phillip. Again… all of the judges praised Phillip.

The judges nailed Hollie for her Bonnie Raitt song “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. Hollie’s performance didn’t give her the moment that Randy said she needs. The critiques from the judges really hurt Hollie… and she is probably the next to go.

Finally… the show had “A Moment” with Joshua singing the James Brown song “This Is A Man’s Man’s World”. Like Jimmy said, Joshua killed this song. Joshua got the first standing O from the judges tonight. This was the best song of the night so far. Could Joshua be the cat??? The judges flipped out over his performance. They loved it, and rightfully so.

YES!!! Jessica is back. The show was right to save the best for last. Her performance of Jennifer Holliday’s song “And I’m Telling You” was the right song at the right time. Jessica didn’t have the big production behind her. It was just her singing from the heart, and KILLING it. A well deserved standing O from the judges. This really is a toss up between Jessica and Joshua. They both will have amazing careers. American Idol has done it again.

In order of appearance:

Phillip Phillips

Song – Have You Ever Seen The Rain – by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Score 5

Steven Tyler: You’re living proof that the road to success is always under construction.

Jennifer Lopez:  I felt like you had this new Joe kinda Cocker quality to you that I hadn’t heard before. It was a great way to start the show.

Randy Jackson: It started off a little rough with the pitch in the beginning. If you have a good time, we have a good time, they have a good time.

Hollie Cavanagh

Song – Faithfully – by Journey

Score – 6

Steven Tyler: I’ve watched you blossom. Creativity is a very delicate flower. You make it bloom every night. Beautiful.

Jennifer Lopez:  In the beginning – I saw how laid back you were. You had such a confidence about you. I’ve been waiting to see that from you. It was really very beautiful.

Randy Jackson: You’re peaking at the right time in this competition. Steve Perry, one of the greatest singers of all time, and you did him proud. I think Hollie wants to have the whole thing dawg.

Joshua Ledet

Song – You Raise Me Up – by Josh Groban

Score – 6

Steven Tyler:  You sang your little tush off today again. Courage is fear, they said as prayers, and you have said yours prayers. And the world is excepting you now like nobody’s business.

Jennifer Lopez: It will be interesting, from now to the end because we do have such amazing singers. It was another great performance from you.

Randy Jackson: I think you’re an amazing artist – with a ginormous career head of you.

Jessica Sanchez

Song – Steal Away by Etta James

Score – 8

Round 2

Song – Volcano by Damian Rice

Score – 8

Steven Tyler:  You just sang like you really dug the way you sung, to yourself. That was beautiful.

Jennifer Lopez: Very few people could have pulled that song off. It was one of the most beautiful moments this show has ever had.

Randy Jackson: Dude… that right there, to me that was one of you’re best performances on the whole season. So great.

Jimmy Iovine: You found a song that is a bull’s eye. That is what you need right now. When he did Volcano, it really sent a message, that I can record something like this and not sound like anybody else.

Song – I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt

Score – 6

Steven Tyler: I thought it felt a little short of the dynamic range of how you can sing.

Jennifer Lopez:  I felt maybe you knew that it had to be emotional, and so you bought emotion, but it got the better of you in your vocal. It made your vocal go off in this one.

Randy Jackson:  It was the (song) wrong choice at the wrong time for me.

Jimmy Ioving: She’s a dark horse. She’s got to come from behind and do magnificent.

Song – This Is A Man’s Man’s World by James Brown

Score – 10

Steven Tyler: Neither man nor woman has ever sang that good with that much compassion on this show… ever! I never heard anything like that in my life.

Jennifer Lopez:   I think people at home maybe thought – like I did – that they had seen everything you have to give, and how you can interpret a song. We hadn’t. That was sickening.

Randy Jackson: I think it’s the greatest song for you. I think it’s one of the best performances in the history of any singing show, including ours. Watch Joshua Ledet, he’s sending everyone to school Ryan.

Song – And I’m Telling You by Jennifer Holliday

Score – 10

Steven Tyler: Another winning performance. Congratulations.

Jennifer Lopez:  It seems like it’s going to be a real race to the finish here. I don’t know who’s going to win.

Randy Jackson:

Jimmy Iovine: And it was every bit as powerful as you could possibly sing this song.  I’ve been through so many great things in my life, and I will remember this moment. (at rehearsal of this song)

Extra songs for tonight.

Joshua and Phillip performed Maroon 5’s “This Love”.

Jessica and Holly sang “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles.

All four sang Foreigners song “When You Love Someone”.
