American Idol – Performance Show – The Finale – Top 2
My whole note – by Eddie U
In round one, the songs are chosen by the American Idol creator himself – Simon Fuller. The second song is the contestant’s favorite song of the season, and the third song is the potential winning song for each contestant, a song picked by the contestant from a small list of songs put together by Jimmy Iovine.
Phillip won the coin toss and chose to go second. Jessica opened the show with I have nothing by Whitney Houston. And as was expected, she killed the song. (that means good)
Phillip’s opening number was an old song called Stand By Me by Ben E. King. The song was bland and without energy. This song calls for a real singer with a lot of range, all of which Phillip doesn’t have.
Jessica’s favorite song of the season that she sang was “Prayer” I have one word for her performance – PERFECTION.
Phillip’s favorite song for his second performance was Billy Joel’s Moving Out”. Phillip did a little better on this song, but it was very second rate compared to Jessica’s performance.
I’m not sure what happened at the end, but Phillip’s guitar rang out and made the ending sound like a train wreck. This should be a NO BRAINER as far as who should win this competition in my opinion.
Randy… WHAT? Come on man! “Even” in round two??? No Way! Jennifer… What show are you watching? Phillip in round two? AGAIN… the judges should be fired! They keep heaping praise on Phillip that is just not justified.
Jessica’s third song – her potential wining song “Change Nothing” started off slow and really didn’t go anywhere. Thankfully the hook in the chorus saved the song for her. I think this is the kind of song that could grow on you a bit, and I hope for Jessica’s sake it does. Jessica needed a home run and the producers didn’t help her by giving her a pop ballade that didn’t show off her best stuff. I think Jimmy – as the producer – blew it on this one.
Phillip’s third song was called “Home”. The judges gave Phillip a standing O. WHAT???
The show is setting up Phillip to win. Why? I have no freakin idea.
The song was again a very mediocre song, sung by an average singer. The prune face on Steven tells the story. Why is he going along with this B.S.?
The judges say that Phillip has originality. To me he makes all of the songs he sings sound like the same song. I could be wrong, but who wants to buy the same song over and over?
In order of appearance:
Song – I have nothing by Whitney Houston
Score – 9
Song – Stand by Me by Ben E. King
Score – 3
Round one critique from the judges:
Steven Tyler: N/A
Jennifer Lopez: This is a tough one because it’s a battle of the opposites. With Jessica you have this amazing vocal prowess, this power, this control, this grit – this beauty. And with Phillip you have our modern day crooner, who has soulfulness, originality, artistry.
Randy Jackson: I will say that round one probably went to Jessica.
Song – The Prayer
Score – 10
Song – Moving Out by Billy Joel
Score – 5
Steven Tyler: When it comes to Phillip Phillips, you don’t always have to be a good egg. Hatch or go bad. And tonight you know he’s hatched some, but I would have to say that Jessica came out on top for round two.
Jennifer Lopez: N/A
Randy Jackson: I think that round was a dead heat, I’d call them both even in round two.
Song – Change Nothing
Score – 7
Steven Tyler: I know how good you can sing, and so do millions of people all over the world. I just didn’t feel that song was the proper song for you to sing with the voice and the places you’ve taken the world before this. Yea baby.
Jennifer Lopez: I thought you sang the song really well.
Randy Jackson: I did not love the song. But what I did love is that you made something more out of the song. You brought the song to life, but I thought the song was just OK.
Song – Home
Score – 6
Steven Tyler: By virtue of your vulnerability and style, you have made the world your home my friend. I heard a little Paul Simon in there. You were perfect tonight, and I think you are the man.
Jennifer Lopez: It was so different. That was a Philip Phillips song. Good song.
Randy Jackson: I love the song, I love you, I love the production, I love the marching band. Everything about that was perfect. That’s your best performance of the night. True artist performance. I love it. Brilliant – genius.
Tonight the show rolled out Jason Derulo’s song sponsored by Coca-Cola. A.I. asked the audience to help write the lyrics for his new song called “Undefeated”. WOW… the show had all year to pick an artist and a song for the finale, and they came up with this mediocre song that sounds like 50 other songs? The producers better do a whole lot better next season. Now there’s a title for you Nigel. “A Whole Lot Better”?
Last years winner – Scotty McCreery – came back and performed one of his songs to close the show. Good job Scotty.
